Sea glass hunting peaks in winter, on a daylight minus tide, after storms have stripped the beach. Storm swell moves sand offshore and bares the gravel where glass collects; a minus tide gets you down to it; daylight is the scarce third ingredient. At Port Orford, OR (NOAA station 9431647), the coming winter offers 17 daylight minus tides across November and December 2026, and the best-scored of the season's five deepest daylight lows is January 21, 2027: −1.89 ft at 5:12 PM.
What does winter swell do to a beach?
The National Park Service describes the seasonal cycle plainly: on many coasts, "low-energy waves dominate in the summer and storm waves dominate in the winter," and high-energy waves "remove sediment from the berm, which is stored offshore in bars parallel to the shoreline." In other words, winter storms carve sand off the beach face and park it offshore; calm summer waves push it back. A summer beach is fat with sand. A winter beach is cut down to whatever the sand was covering.
Waves also sort what remains. Per the NPS again: beach sediments transported long distances get sorted by grain size, with wave energy winnowing material into patches of similar size. That sorting is measurable geology.
Here is where the verified part ends and beachcomber lore begins, so let's label it. The lore says tumbled glass — pebble-sized, roughly pebble-weight — travels with the gravel and turns up in the same beds, and that the days after a good blow are when a beach gives back what it has been sitting on. We can't compute that, and no agency certifies it. But it is at least consistent with the sorting physics, and it explains the standard advice you'll hear in any coastal town: search the pebble patches, not the sand flats, and go after a storm. Treat the strip-and-return sand cycle as fact and the glass-rides-with-gravel rule as well-worn folklore that has never had a better explanation.
Why do you still need a minus tide?
Because the freshly exposed gravel sits low on the beach face, and much of it only comes out of the water below the 0.0 ft MLLW line — the long-run average of each day's lowest tide. A minus tide is any low predicted below that zero, and it uncovers ground that ordinary lows never touch.
Winter adds a wrinkle on the West Coast: the good lows move to the end of the day. Across the 11 West Coast stations Tidewindow tracks, 2026 holds 940 minus tides, of which 535 land in daylight (57%). Bucket those daylight windows by hour and you get two rush hours: 6 AM (56 windows) and 5 PM (51), with midday nearly empty — 11 each at 11 AM and noon. Summer minus tides are breakfast events; winter minus tides are dinner events that end at dusk. So the winter sea glass formula is specific: an afternoon, a minus low, and a beach the last storm worked over.
When exactly? Port Orford, worked example
Port Orford sits on Oregon's south coast; the station page covers Battle Rock Beach, Rocky Point, and Agate Beach. Here are the five deepest daylight lows of the October 2026–March 2027 king-tide season there:

Every one of the five lands in the afternoon, and the table shows why depth alone doesn't pick the winner. Take December 24: the window opens at 3:40 PM, but only 69 minutes of it fall in daylight — the light is gone by about 4:49 PM, a full 85 minutes before the 6:14 PM low. You hunt the falling tide, never the bottom of it. January 21 is the mirror image: shallowest low in the table, but its 152 daylight minutes stretch from the 2:45 PM window start to about 5:17 PM, just past the 5:12 PM low. It's the only window of the five where you can stand on the lowest ground in light, which is why it takes the top score of these five despite the modest number.

July 14's −2.46 ft low is about 3 inches deeper than the winter season's deepest daylight low (−2.21 ft on December 24) and comes with 217 minutes of daylight against December 24's 69. Notice the flip in the time column, too: through August the best lows are morning affairs, and from September on they're evening ones — September itself is the slump, with just 3 daylight minus tides and a best window that isn't even a minus tide. So why does the sea glass crowd cheer for the weaker winter windows? Because of the first section. The verified sand cycle means July's magnificent lows expose a beach at its sandiest, while December's best window — a cramped 113 minutes on the 23rd — arrives when storms have been mining the beach face for weeks. The tide table measures water; it can't measure what the water uncovered. Winter is when the two curves — beach condition rising, tide quality still decent — cross.
What should you watch besides the tide?
Winter surf on the Oregon coast deserves respect, and the guidance below is Oregon State Parks', not ours: always keep one eye on the ocean so a bigger wave doesn't catch you off guard — sneaker waves are unpredictable and can knock adults off their feet. Stay away from logs on the beach or in the surf. And know when the tide is coming in, especially when exploring tidepools or secluded beaches, since incoming water can strand you.
One computed footnote to that: in four of the five winter windows above, daylight ends before the predicted low, so set your exit by the clock, not by the water.
