The best time to go tide pooling is the hour before a low daylight tide — and on the US West Coast, the calendar decides when that hour is. In July and August 2026, 93–97% of daylight minus tides at the 11 Pacific stations Tidewindow tracks land before noon, most near dawn. From October through December the split inverts to essentially 100% afternoon. Seattle's deepest daylight low of the year, −3.8 ft at NOAA station 9447130, came at 11:20 AM on July 14.
"Best time" is really three questions stacked on top of each other: how low the water needs to be, what hour of the day that low arrives, and which months serve it up in daylight. The first question has its own page (short version: the threshold depends on your coast). This page answers the other two with the 2026 predictions, then ends with the one habit that matters more than any of it: arrive an hour early.
What time of day is best?
Whenever the lowest daylight tide is — which sounds circular until you see how tightly the answer clusters. Here is every daylight minus tide (a low below 0.0 ft MLLW with at least 30 minutes of its window in daylight) at the 11 West Coast stations Tidewindow tracks, July 1 – December 31, 2026, bucketed by the hour of the low:

Two humps, almost nothing in between. The single busiest hour is 6 AM (60 windows); the busiest afternoon hour is 5 PM (51). Midday is the desert — 11 AM through 1 PM holds just 7% of the year's second-half supply. If your mental image of tide pooling is a sunny noon stroll, the tide tables mostly disagree.
The reason for the two humps is seasonal, and it's the useful part.
When does dawn flip to afternoon?
October — and the flip is nearly total. Same dataset, split by month, counting how many daylight minus tides land before noon:

The lone October holdout is a squeaker: Port Townsend on October 5, a −0.23 ft low at 5:48 AM with 39 minutes of usable light. Everything else that month — and every daylight minus tide on this coast in November and December — is an afternoon event.
The physics behind the flip is the tilt of Earth's axis working on the West Coast's unequal daily lows; we walk through it here. The practical translation is simple:
- Summer (June – September): set an alarm. The deep lows are dawn events on the outer coast, with lows clustering around 5–7 AM.
- Fall through midwinter (October – January): sleep in. The deep lows return as mid-afternoon events, mostly 2–6 PM, right up against king-tide season.
Where does the dawn rule bend?
Puget Sound runs late. Tide timing shifts as the tide wave works into the Sound, so Seattle and Port Townsend get their summer deep lows in late morning and midday, not at dawn: of their 41 daylight minus tides in July 2026, 27 were before noon and 14 after, with the median low at 11 AM. Seattle's −3.8 ft floor on July 14 arrived at 11:20 AM — the most family-friendly deep low on the coast. The flip side arrives in winter: Seattle and Port Townsend have zero daylight minus tides in November and December 2026; their deep winter lows land in the middle of the night. The East Coast barely has a dawn rule at all. NOAA classifies East Coast tides as semidiurnal — two nearly equal lows a day — versus the mixed pattern out west ("The U.S. West Coast tends to have mixed semidiurnal tides, whereas a semidiurnal pattern is more typical of the East Coast"). With both daily lows similar, almost any low uncovers the zone and the minus sign matters much less. At Bar Harbor, Maine, July–December 2026 has 239 lows below +1.0 ft but only 52 daylight minus tides — and Acadia's tide pooling is famous anyway. Which season should you actually pick?
Both, for different reasons.
Summer is the depth season. Every Washington and Oregon station in the dataset posts its deepest daylight low of 2026 in mid-July — from Port Orford's 6:37 AM to Seattle's 11:20 AM — and long daylight means even a 6 AM low comes with hours of usable morning. The catch is the alarm clock, and on the outer coast, morning marine fog.
King-tide season is the comfort season. From November through January, the same celestial alignment that produces the winter's highest highs also produces afternoon minus tides. In California it's the better season by the numbers: all four California stations Tidewindow tracks post their deepest daylight low of 2026 on Christmas Eve, December 24, in the afternoon — La Jolla bottoms at −1.88 ft at 3:47 PM — depths July can't match there, at hours no alarm clock resents. Shorter days are the constraint: a 4:30 PM low in December is racing sunset, so the afternoon windows are real but brief.
September and October are the thin months — 39 and 47 windows coast-wide versus July's 192 — which is exactly when a month calendar earns its keep.
The one-hour rule
Whatever day and hour you pick, arrive about an hour before the predicted low. Every window Tidewindow computes carries an arrive-by time set 60 minutes ahead of the low for exactly this reason: you want to walk out on falling water, reach the lowest zone as the tide bottoms, and be working your way back as it turns. Show up at the printed low-tide minute and the front half of the window — often the calmer, clearer half — is already gone.
The National Park Service's guidance for Acadia frames the opportunity the same way: tide pooling happens in "the window of time 1.5 hours before to 1.5 hours after low tide," with the park advising visitors to start before the low reaches its lowest point and head back as the water rises.
